IN BRIEF: The European Parliament voted today to postpone implementation of its new Medical Device Regulation (MDR) by one year. EU MDR, originally scheduled to go into effect May 26, 2020, will now take effect May 26, 2021, if individual member states approve.

IN BRIEF: The European Commission is working on a proposal to postpone the implementation of the Medical Device Regulation by one year – in which case the new MDR application date will be in May 2021. The proposal is expected to be announced in early April and a final decision will be made before the end of May.

“With patient health and safety as a guiding principle, the Commission announced on 25 March 2020 that work on a proposal to postpone the application date of the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) for one year is ongoing. The goal is to submit this proposal in early April so the Parliament and Council can adopt it by the end of May. This will take the pressure off national authorities, notified bodies, manufacturers and other actors so they can focus fully on urgent priorities related to the coronavirus crisis.”
